The primary midwife of Northeast Kansas Homebirth Service is Anita Woods, a direct-entry or “lay” midwife. Anita is nationally certified by the North American Registry of Midwives as a Certified Professional Midwife, certified by the American Heart Association/American Academy of Pediatrics in neonatal resuscitation, and the only Christian midwife in Kansas City who is a graduate of a professional direct-entry midwifery school, Ancient Art Midwifery Institute. Anita formerly worked with Heartland Midwifery, a nurse-midwifery home birth practice based in
Topeka, and a large portion of her clinical experience was obtained at Mercy Maternity Center, a Christian charity birth center in the
Philippines, operated by NewLife International School of Midwifery of Portland, Oregon.
Anita has four children, is a two-time cesarean survivor and has had a home birth after cesarean (HBAC). She is the former president of the International Cesarean Awareness Network, and has counseled hundreds of women who have experienced an unwanted
cesarean or who have sought vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Anita’s midwifery training includes a specialty in VBAC, with specific knowledge in failure to progress, cephalopelvic disproportion, deep transverse arrest and asynclitism.
A homeschooler
since 1998, Anita has experience in extended breastfeeding, tandem nursing, cloth diapering, non-circumcision, selective and non-vaccination,
and is quiverful. Her family lives on 2.3 acres in a quiet, rural area surrounded by pasture land and corn, and enjoys
camping, family, and swimming.
